Extra Protection Against Cavities
For many patients, regular checkups and cleanings, combined with diligent oral care at home, are enough to prevent tooth decay. However, some patients are more susceptible to developing cavities. Children, who are still developing good brushing and flossing habits, may not always clean their teeth sufficiently. Even some adults, due to certain diseases or medications they take, are more prone to tooth decay. For these patients, Dr. Meilink offers fluoride treatments and sealants for extra protection against tooth decay.
Demineralization is a process that occurs when acids attack the tooth enamel, causing it to erode and leaving the tooth vulnerable to decay. Fluoride is a mineral that helps remineralize, or strengthen and protect, the tooth enamel. Most patients receive enough protection by drinking fluoridated water and using fluoridated toothpaste, but those who are more susceptible to cavities may need more help. Dr. Meilink offers professional-strength fluoride treatments during checkups that can not only help prevent cavities but may also reverse tooth decay in its earliest stages.
Patients who are more vulnerable to decay may also benefit from sealants placed on their back teeth. Applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars, these thin plastic coatings provide a barrier between the teeth and acidic substances that often collect in the depressions of these teeth. The liquid sealant is painted onto the teeth and then hardened, providing protection for several years. It is important to note that sealants will only protect the tooth surfaces they cover, so you must still maintain good oral hygiene and visit Dr. Meilink regularly for checkups.
