Treating Tooth Decay
Tooth decay, also known as cavities or dental caries, occurs when acids wear away the tooth enamel. Acids are formed when your saliva mixes with the sugars and starches you eat. If left untreated, the decay can extend beyond the enamel to the underlying layer of the tooth called the dentin. As the dentin is connected to nerves, decay reaching this portion of the tooth will cause pain. Dr. Meilink can easily treat a cavity by removing the tooth decay and replacing it with a filling.
At Dental Smilemakers, we use tooth-colored fillings to treat cavities. Made of a composite resin material that is dyed to match the rest of your tooth, your filling will be virtually undetectable. Composite resin bonds with your tooth structure so well that it actually helps strengthen a tooth that has been weakened by decay.
Filling Placement by Your Kansas City Dentist
To place your tooth-colored filling, Dr. Meilink will first administer a local anesthetic to the area surrounding the tooth. He will then gently remove the decayed portion of your tooth with a dental instrument. After cleaning and sterilizing the area, the soft resin material will be placed into the prepared space. The filling will be hardened using a curing light, and then Dr. Meilink will polish and smooth out the material until it blends in and shines like your natural tooth enamel.
