When a Tooth Cannot be Saved

extractionsBecause nothing beats the strength of a natural tooth, Dr. Meilink will do everything possible to help save a tooth that is damaged or infected. However, tooth extraction cannot be avoided in some cases. If you have advanced gum disease, a severe tooth infection, an abscess, or a fracture that extends into the tooth root, extraction may be your only option. Using the utmost precision and care, Dr. Meilink can remove your tooth to help prevent your problems from compounding.

Simple Tooth Extraction Procedure

Using a local anesthetic, and possibly nitrous oxide if you need more relaxation, your Kansas City Dentist will apply a dental tool to your tooth and move it back and forth to loosen the supporting ligaments. Once the tooth is loosened, it can easily be extracted using forceps.

Post-Extraction Care

Dr. Meilink will have you bite down on a piece of gauze after your tooth is removed to stop the bleeding. An essential part of the healing process involves a blood clot forming in the tooth socket. If this clot is disturbed, an infection called dry socket may occur, causing pain and damage to the tissues beneath the tooth socket. For the first 24 hours after your extraction, do not smoke, spit, or drink from a straw to avoid loosening the blood clot. Eat a soft diet the first day. To relieve pain and reduce swelling, take painkillers as instructed by Dr. Meilink and apply an ice pack or cold compress to the outside of your cheek. After 24 hours, you may gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water a few times a day, and you may brush your teeth and tongue, but do not touch the extraction area until it has healed. Call Dental Smilemakers if you have any questions or concerns about your healing process.
