Prepared to Handle Dental Emergencies

dental emergenciesAt Dental Smilemakers, we are prepared to handle dental emergencies for active patients. If you are an existing patient, simply call our main office number. If your emergency occurs during normal office hours, we will work into our schedule. We also provide emergency treatment for new patients during regular business hours. Dr. Meilink and his helpful staff are happy to accommodate you to help relieve your pain and restore your tooth function as quickly as possible.

Common Dental Emergencies

If you experience a dental emergency, take the following precautions and then call our office immediately:

  • Injury to lips, tongue, cheeks, or gums. Apply pressure to the site with gauze or a clean cloth to stop the bleeding. If bleeding persists, go to the nearest emergency room
  • Toothache. Many cases of sudden toothache are due to a dental problem being ignored for too long. Call our office to make an appointment, and apply a cold compress to your cheek to help reduce pain or swelling in the meantime.
  • Knocked-out or broken tooth. Retrieve any tooth pieces if possible. Rinse them in cool water if they are dirty, being careful not to touch the tissues at the tooth root. Place the whole tooth or tooth fragments in milk, saline solution, or inside your cheek to keep them moist. Never place them in plain water. If your mouth is bleeding, apply pressure to the bleeding site with a clean cloth. Call our office immediately for an appointment, as a knocked-out tooth has the best chances of reattaching if you see your dentist within one hour of injury.
  • Object stuck between teeth. Gently slide floss between the teeth to try to remove the object. If flossing does not help, call Dr. Meilink so that he can use more sophisticated dental tools to dislodge the object. Do not attempt to remove the object on your own with anything other than floss.
